Fuerteventura is considered the Maui of Europe, year round swells, warm waters, constant sunshine (it only rains less than10 days a year) and all types of surfing, from beginner to experts, make it an ideal destination for surfers of all levels. Most spots are reef/lava rock, but there are also quite a few beginner sand beaches to choose from. The North of the island is where you will find the most spots, see map at wannasurf.com. We were there for a windsurfing trip, so located in the Southern part of the island. About 5km from Costa Calma is the West coast town of La Pared, with an ideal sandy beach for beginners. The town is not so touristy as the Northern ones, with only one big hotel, a surf school and not much else. The surf school has set up a campground where it is possible to stay for cheap. At the southernmost tip of the island lays Punta Del Tigre, right next to the ...lighthouse, a more advanced spot with a rocky bottom, but also with bigger waves. To access Punta Del Tigre, you will need a 4x4 car and about 30 minutes from the touristy village of El Moro Jable/Jandia. There is no real town there, just a few fishing boats, houses and restaurants. When renting a car, it is better to rent a 4x4 as insurance on the normal car will not cover damages if incurred on the dirt roads, most surfing is only accessible through these dirt roads.
